What is Aneurysmal Clipping ?

An aneurysm is a bulge in the artery caused by a weak/damaged atrial wall. An aneurismal clipping is an open surgical intervention procedure where a clip made of titanium or a surgically non-toxic metal is placed at the neck of this aneurysm to prevent further damage to vital structures. This process is generally done by a neurosurgeon for brain aneurysms. The clip acts as a barrier between the blood vessel and the aneurysm, halting the growth of it. The clipping procedure depends on the size, geometry, favorability, accessibility and the anatomy of the aneurysm.

What is Aneurysmal Clipping ?

How is it done?

  • The process is performed under General Anesthesia. The patient will be moved to the observation ward and kept on pre-operative protocols from the night before.
  • A craniotomy cut is made in the skull and the tissues dissected.
  • The aneurysm is then visualized and assessed. After maneuvering the adjacent structures into an operatable position, the clip is opened and placed on the aneurysm.
  • The clip is generally placed at the neck of the aneurysm or at the junction of the artery. There are different clips based on the size of the aneurysm.
  • Closure is done in layers under sterile protocols and dressing is done. General anesthesia is stopped and the intubation removed.
  • The patient is advised to be on bed rest for at least 3-4 days after the procedure. The patient may be kept on IV support for regular nutrition and hydration.
