What is Articulation of Speech ?

Articulation or speech production is the clarity with which syllables and words are produced. Speech therapy for articulation involves regular exercises to help a child form correct words and syllables in a way that they are comprehensible. Articulation not only involves the way vocal cords vibrate but also the way lips, tongue, palate, cheeks, and throat works. Articulation defects are seen in children suffering from anatomical disorders, cleft lip or palate, pathologies, or developmental disorders. The disorders may range from mild ones where syllables like ‘r’ are pronounced as ‘w’ to more severe cases where words are all mumbled up and one cannot make proper sense of them.
