What is Assistive Technologies ?

They are items, devices, strategies or pieces of technology used to increase the functional ability of individuals or children with disabilities. Assistive technology equipment or method helps a person communicate better in their work field or their daily lives. They range from low-tech devices like chalk and board to high-tech devices like specially designed software. Some examples of such devices are reading pens, voice recognition equipment, hearing aids, prostheses, pointing devices, walkers, wheel chairs and more. The assistive technologies are of different types based on their functional areas existence, communication, body support, mobility, environmental interaction, education, sports and recreation.

What is Critical Care ?

Critical care is medical care for people who have life-threatening injuries and illnesses. It usually takes place in an intensive care unit (ICU). Our team of specially-trained health care providers give you 24-hour care. This includes using machines to constantly monitor your vital signs. You need critical care if you have a life-threatening illness or injury, such as: Severe burns, COVID-19, Shock, Stroke

How is it done?

  • Based on a patient’s disability and its severity, the professionals assign the right assistive technology device
  • The patient is explained in detail about the functions of the device. High-tech devices like softwares need additional briefing regarding their setups and connectivity.
  • The patient will be trained by the staff on how to insert, use and remove the devices on their own.
  • In the case of pediatric patients, parents/guardians will be given a briefing on pediatric-specific assisting devices.
  • Regular follow-up will be done to assess the patient’s functional abilities along with the devices.

How is it done?

  • Catheters, flexible tubes used to get fluids into the body or to drain fluids from the body
  • Dialysis machines ("artificial kidneys") for people with kidney failure
  • Feeding tubes, which give you nutritional support
  • Intravenous (IV) tubes to give you fluids and medicines
  • Machines which check your vital signs and display them on monitors
  • Oxygen therapy to give you extra oxygen to breathe in
  • Tracheostomy tubes, which are breathing tubes. The tube is placed in a surgically made hole that goes through the front of the neck and into the windpipe.
  • Ventilators (breathing machines), which move air in and out of your lungs. This is for people who have respiratory failure.
