What is Atherectomy ?

It is a minimally invasive treatment procedure for people suffering from atherosclerosis. Atherosclerosis is the condition where the arteries get accumulated with a plaque material (generally fat and calcium build up) resulting in decreased blood flow through the vessels. In atherectomy, a thin catheter with a blade attached to its end is inserted into the arteries and the plaque is removed. This procedure is an alternative to angioplasty. Depending on the movement of the catheter inside the artery, the different
types of atherectomy are orbital, rotational, laser and directional. The plaque lining the artery will be shaved away by the blade or vaporized by laser technology, resulting in wider arteries.

What is Atherectomy ?

It is a minimally invasive treatment procedure for people suffering from atherosclerosis. Atherosclerosis is the condition where the arteries get accumulated with a plaque material (generally fat and calcium build up) resulting in decreased blood flow through the vessels. In atherectomy, a thin catheter with a blade attached to its end is inserted into the arteries and the plaque is removed. This procedure is an alternative to angioplasty. Depending on the movement of the catheter inside the artery, the different types of atherectomy are orbital, rotational, laser and directional. How is it done?

  • The patient is prepared according to the procedure by knowing their allergies, putting them on bed rest before the procedure and giving them premedication.
  • Under local anesthesia, a small incision or cut is made at the arm or abdomen and a special catheter with a blade is inserted.
  • The catheter is passed through the blood vessels until it reaches the narrowed coronary artery. Here, based on the type of atherectomy being performed, the rotational blade, laser or cutting device attached to the catheter is activated.
  • Once the whole plaque is removed, the catheter is slowly removed and the area of insertion dressed. The procedure can be performed along with an imaging procedure for visualization.
  • An angioplasty may sometimes be performed afterwards. The patient is advised to take bed rest for at least 24 hours.
