What is Balloon Valvuloplasty ?

It is the treatment procedure for conditions where the heart doors or valves have narrow openings. This leads to decreased blood flow from the auricles to the ventricles resulting in low blood flow to the remaining parts of the body. In a valvuloplasty procedure, a balloon catheter is inserted into the heart valves which cause the valves to expand in size, resulting in adequate blood flow. The
procedure is done in children and adults suffering from valve stenosis, valve calcifications, congenital heart issues or ischemic heart conditions. This procedure is done in cases where surgical valve placement is not possible.

What is Balloon Valvuloplasty ?

How is it done?

  • Patient is prepared according to the procedure by recording their vitals, allergies, past medical history and taking pre-operative medications.
  • A small incision or cut is made in the abdominal region under local anaesthetic application and the catheter is inserted into the most prominent artery or vein.
  • The catheter is passed along the vessels to reach the heart. The balloon is inflated and positioned in the valves.
  • A contrast dye may be injected via IV to record the course of the catheter.
  • The balloon is inflated upon which the calcified or closed valves open to the required diameter. The stenosis is relieved.
  • The catheter is then slowly removed through the inserted blood vessel and the area is dressed properly.
  • The patient is advised to avoid hard exercises and to rest as much as possible for 4 – 5 days
