What is Colo-rectal surgery

The colorectal surgery field is also known as proctology and deals with the peripheral ending parts of your gut. Colorectal surgeries involved the small intestine, large intestines, rectum, and anus ends of the gastrointestinal tract. Any pathologies, cysts, tumors, abnormalities, and neoplastic growths related to these regions are excised by performing a colorectal surgery. Colorectal surgeries also include complete or partial removal of the colon, removal of involved hemorrhoids, inflammatory bowel disease surgery, and rectal resection with/without reconstruction. A small cut will be made on the abdomen, via which instruments are inserted and the affected part of your gut treated.

What is Trauma surgery

Trauma surgery is the interventional, open surgical procedure done to treat injuries, fractures,
burns, ulcers, herniation, crush injuries, and more in an acute setting using both operative and non-
operative management techniques. The injuries can be due to heavy impact forces, road traffic
accidents, falls or object crushes, sports injuries, and more. Trauma surgery also has knowledge of
the adjacent musculoskeletal structures and vital structures like nerves and arteries because
whenever an injury occurs, it is most likely to involve one or the other adjacent structures. The
injuries may be life-threatening too. Trauma surgeons are trained in immediate and complete
management of the injury.

How is it done?

  • As it is a major surgical process, the patient’s detailed medical history will be taken before the surgery, and pre-operative medication will be given.
  • The surgery is typically performed under ultrasound or endoscopic screening.
  • Under local anesthesia, an incision or cut will be made on your abdomen and an endoscope along with the surgical instruments will be passed into the gut.
  • When the tube reaches the affected area, based on the procedure the entire part or a partial part will be removed. The removed part will be extracted from the incision.
  • Based on the treatment, the remaining ends of your intestines can be stored back to restore normal bowel movements, or a graft can be placed over the treated area.
  • Patient will be kept on strict diet regulations and bed rest as the gut needs to heal after the surgery for normal bowel movements.
