What is Eardrum Repair ?

It is a surgical procedure done to treat a tear or a defect in the tympanic membrane of your ear. It is done in people suffering from tears, holes or gaps in their ear membranes. The tears or ruptures may occur due to ear infections, loud noises, trauma or injuries to the ear, Altitude or pressure changes, during cleaning the ear or during adjacent structure surgery. There are different types of eardrum repair or Tymphanoplasty based on the parts of the ear it involves. The repair may be done with the help of a graft material.

  • Hemodialysis is a treatment to filter wastes and water from your blood, as your kidneys.
  • Did when they were healthy. Hemodialysis helps control blood pressure and balance.
  • Important minerals, such as potassium, sodium, and calcium, in your blood.
  • Hemodialysis can help you feel better and live longer, but it’s not a cure for kidney failure.
  • You may be able to do hemodialysis at home. Normally, hemodialysis begins well before your kidneys have shut down to the point of causing life-threatening complications.

How is it done?

  • The procedure is generally done under general anesthesia. The patient is asked to lie down on the operation table and access to the inner ear gained.
  • An otoscope or an endoscope may be used to visualize the inner structures.
  • The ear will be first cleaned and made rid of infections, hard wax, and debris. Then the professionals will take a graft or a patch of tissue and place it over the hole in the eardrum.
  • This graft may be taken from the patient itself or can be allogenous. The graft is placed over the hole and is attached to the remaining ear membrane with the use of surgical adhesives or sutures.
  • Removal or repair of the smaller bones located in the middle ear may be done.
  • Smaller holes will be repaired using a gel or a special paper. The area is cleaned, assessed and the patient is discharged with an ear pack as the patient may feel sensitive after the surgery.
