What is Endocrine surgery

Endocrine surgery is performed on patients suffering from endocrine diseases and hormonal imbalances like adrenal insufficiency, hyperthyroidism, diabetes, PCOS, acromegaly, Cushing disease, and such. The endocrine glands secrete hormones that regulate all functions and physiological changes in your body. When a specific endocrine gland secretes hormones abnormally, its related organs and their functions get affected. Endocrine surgery is targeted toward the endocrine glands like the thyroid and parathyroid glands, pituitary glands, adrenal glands, and more. Parts like the pancreas, ovaries, and testes also secrete certain endocrine hormones for the normal functioning of related organs.

What is Trauma surgery

Trauma surgery is the interventional, open surgical procedure done to treat injuries, fractures,
burns, ulcers, herniation, crush injuries, and more in an acute setting using both operative and non-
operative management techniques. The injuries can be due to heavy impact forces, road traffic
accidents, falls or object crushes, sports injuries, and more. Trauma surgery also has knowledge of
the adjacent musculoskeletal structures and vital structures like nerves and arteries because
whenever an injury occurs, it is most likely to involve one or the other adjacent structures. The
injuries may be life-threatening too. Trauma surgeons are trained in immediate and complete
management of the injury.

How is it done?

  • The procedure is done under general anesthesia. It can be done to remove associated tumors or to partially or completely remove them through the gland.
  • Different approaches can be done for different endocrine glands secrete they are all placed in different parts of the body.
  • The gland function, its anatomy during flexion and extension, the hormone quantity and more will be determined before the surgery using various diagnostic tests
  • For pituitary and hypothalamus surgery, access is gained through the brain. For pancreas, adrenals, and neuroendocrine glands, the procedure is done through the abdomen, and for thyroid and parathyroid glands, access is gained via neck incisions.
  • After gaining access the glands are either excised completely or partially based on the diagnosis.
  • Following the surgery, the patient may be advised on bed rest and prescribed hormone- regulating medication.
