Simply pit, a fracture is a discontinuation in the normal anatomical shape of a bone. There are many types of fractures based on the area involved and the severity. They can be simple (involving a single fragment) compound (involving multiple fragments) complex (involving a vital structure like nerves, vessels and adjacent organs) comminuted (where fragments are crushed into many tiny pieces) favorable and unfavorable due to muscle attachments and more. They be as small as a hairline digit fracture or as severe as rib cage fractures where the fragments have been driven into the lungs.
