What is Gynecomastia surgery ?

Gynecomastia is the condition where overdeveloped or enlarged breasts are seen in men. It can be due to developmental abnormalities, syndromes, hormonal imbalances, and more. Certain medications may also cause the breast tissue to swell up and certain lifestyle habits can cause excess fat accumulation near the breasts resulting in a droopy, sagged appearance. The condition can be cured on its own in some cases, and in the others, surgical intervention is advised. Gynecomastia surgery is performed in men, and the procedure is similar to that of a breast reduction or a conventional breast surgery.

What is Hysterectomy?

A hysterectomy is the surgical removal of the uterus, and most likely, the cervix. Depending on the reason for the surgery, a hysterectomy may involve removing surrounding organs and tissues, such as the fallopian tubes and ovaries. The uterus is where a baby grows during pregnancy. It’s lining is the blood you shed during your menstrual period. You lose the ability to get pregnant and you will not get your period after a hysterectomy.

How is it done?

  • Before the surgery, the patient will be prepared medically, their medical history is taken, specific hormonal tests and diagnostic tests like mammograms will be run.
  • Under general anesthesia, an incision is made on the chest under the breast region and is extended horizontally. Vertical incisions can also be made depending on the technique chosen by the doctor.
  • The skin is elevated, and the underlying tissues are dissected and separated. The excess fatty layer is removed using surgical instruments or laser technology.
  • Excess skin and tissues are excised, and the layers are properly sutured back. A drainage tube may be put in place to remove inflammatory fluid occurring due to the surgery
  • Dressing is done, and post-operative instructions are given. The patient will be kept on pain relief and antibiotic medications until the next follow-up.
