What is Hip Arthroscopy ?

It is a modification of conventional hip surgery. The procedure is same as a hip arthroplasty but the approach and technique differs. Hip arthroscopy is a minimally invasive variation. In this procedure, the doctors can visualize the hip joint either having to made huge incisions and dissection. The hip joint, femoral head, pelvic bone and the joint space is visualized using an athroscopic camera that will sent into the joint space through small incisions.  It is done to treat the inflamed, necrotic or fractured hip joints and regain proper anatomical function with the help of prostheses.

The hip joint, femoral head, pelvic bone and the joint space is visualized using an athroscopic camera that will sent into the joint space through small incisions.  It is done to treat the inflamed, necrotic or fractured hip joints and regain proper anatomical function with the help of prostheses.

How is it done?

  • The procedure can be done under general or local anesthesia. Pre operative x-rays will be taken. Mid operative screenings will also be running to check the arthroscopy tube’s placement.
  • The hip will be placed in such a way that the joint is relaxed to get easy access. A small puncture is made through which the arthroscope is passed.
  • The arthroscope is moved towards the joint until it reaches the joint space. The surgeons will be able to view the joint anatomy on the attached monitor.
  • Fluid will be passing through the arthroscope to ensure clear vision. Small surgical intents will be inserted through the incision.
  • Based on the problem, the effected cartilage is torn off and repaired, the effected bone is trimmed or the inflamed tissue surrounding the join is removed.
  • After the procedure the instruments and the arthroscope are retracted slowly through the incision itself. An absorbent dressing is applied onto the hip.
  • The patients will be kept on pain and/or muscle relaxant medications and will be advised against strenuous physical exercises for a couple of days.
