What is Hip Replacement Surgery ?

Hip replacement or total arthroplasty is one in patients who suffer from chronic arthritic Hip pain, dislocated hips, trauma, necrosis, infection, stiffness and mobility disorders, connective tissue disorders, and inflammatory diseases like rheumatoid arthritis and more. In this treatment, the doctors remove the damaged parts of your Hip joints and replace them with artificial or near natural parts like metal, ceramic, silicone, or plastic reconstructive prostheses. Arthritis is the major reason why patients are advised Hip surgery. In an arthritic hip, the cartilage lining is very thin making the joint space smaller with inflammation and swelling. Excessive bone build-up and bone spurs can also be seen in some cases.

What is Hip Replacement Surgery ?

Hip replacement or total arthroplasty is one in patients who suffer from chronic arthritic Hip pain, dislocated hips, trauma, necrosis, infection, stiffness and mobility disorders, connective tissue disorders, and inflammatory diseases like rheumatoid arthritis and more. How is it done?

  • Preoperative X-rays and diagnostic tests will be done. As it is an invasive, major surgical procedure, the patient will be sedated and anesthetized.
  • An incision or cut will be made over the Hip, the underlying tissues will be separated and the Hip joint will be visualized.
  • A depression or a socket is created, through which instruments will be passed and the femoral bone head will be visualized.
  • The arthritic part will be cut off, and inflammatory tissues will be excised and removed while keeping the healthy bone intact.
  • Implants will be placed through the socket into the pelvis to reconstruct the damaged or removed bony parts.
  • Sterile closure and dressing will be done. The patient will be advised to take bed rest and Physiotherapy exercises may be advised to regain mobility and assess healing.
  • The femoral head will also be replaced with a prosthetic one and will be attached back to the Hip properly.
