What is Knee Replacement Surgery ?

Also known as knee arthroplasty, it involves treating the weight-bearing areas of the knee and restoring the proper functioning of the knee. It is done in patients suffering from chronic knee pain, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, joint diseases due to trauma, osteoporosis, joint collapse, and/or cartilage tears. The damaged parts of your thigh bone, shinbone, and the front and sides of the knee are cut off followed by replacement using medically compatible plastic or polymeric materials. The surgical technique and type of knee replacement may vary depending on the patients’ age, weight, and level of disease, knee shape, and anatomy of the region.

  • Did when they were healthy. Hemodialysis helps control blood pressure and balance.
  • Important minerals, such as potassium, sodium, and calcium, in your blood.
  • Hemodialysis can help you feel better and live longer, but it’s not a cure for kidney failure.
  • You may be able to do hemodialysis at home. Normally, hemodialysis begins well before your kidneys have shut down to the point of causing life-threatening complications.

What is Knee Replacement Surgery ?

Also known as knee arthroplasty, it involves treating the weight-bearing areas of the knee and restoring the proper functioning of the knee. It is done in patients suffering from chronic knee pain, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, joint diseases due to trauma, osteoporosis, joint collapse, and/or cartilage tears. The damaged parts of your thigh bone, shinbone, and the front and sides of the knee are cut off followed by replacement using medically compatible plastic or polymeric materials. How is it done?

  • The doctors will measure the dimensions of your knee, and run a few knee x-rays and diagnostic tests before the procedure. The patient will be explained the post-operative walking restrictions so that they can prepare properly.
  • Your knee will be bent for proper access and an incision will be made on the knee. The incision will be extended towards the sides and the skin will be elevated.
  • After dissecting the underlying tissues, the knee cap will be exposed which will also be separated.
  • The damaged joint parts are now cut and the space is irrigated making it free of inflammatory tissue and debris.
  • The prostheses or artificial joints will now be attached to the prepared bone ends and tested by lightly moving the knee.
  • The knee cap will be placed backed and the overlying skin and tissues sutured back. The surgery may last up to 2 hours
  • Patients will be advised not to exert too much pressure on their legs and knees for the following couple of days.
