What is Myelogram?

A Myelogram is a diagnostic technique done to detect problems involving the spinal canal. It is done along along with an X-ray, CT, or MRI scan. A contrast dye is used to identify where the defect lies. Vertebral anomalies, spinal root problems, spinal cord problems, neural anomalies, pain involving the lower back, disc irregularities, nerve root problems and more can be diagnosed with the help of a myelogram. Under high-definition radiological imaging, the course of this dye is viewed. Many patients
show up with lifestyle-related lower back issues. A myelogram can also be suggested after a recent surgery to check for iatrogenic abnormalities if any.

How is it done?

  • The procedure involves the injection of a contrast medium into the spinal fluid. There may be surface-level bleeding hence the doctors will ask you about your past medical history and proceed accordingly.
  • Once the patient is asked to lie down sideways on the scanning table.
  • The area is cleaned with antiseptic and a local anesthetic agent administered.
  • The contrast fluid is then slowly injected into the spinal canal. The patient may feel slight pressure while injecting.
  • The radiological examinations are then started based on the preferred technique.
  • After the test, the patient is asked to avoid heavy activity and to lie flat on their backs as much as possible.
