What is Neuromuscular Medicine ?

It is a branch of neurology and physical medicine that includes treatment and rehabilitation of diseases affecting the motor nerve response, nerve roots, peripheral nerves, and neuromuscular junction. These diseases caused decreased muscle tone and functionality due to improper nerve response. These diseases can manifest both in adults and children and will cause muscle atrophy, weakness, trouble walking, improper balance, facial muscle loss, and progressive memory loss. Some of the common neuromuscular diseases are motor neuron disease, multiple sclerosis, myopathy, myositis, peripheral neuropathy, and more. Neuromuscular medicine is directed to block the neuromuscular junction link, thereby preventing muscles from adverse nerve responses.

What is Neuromuscular Medicine ?

It is a branch of neurology and physical medicine that includes treatment and rehabilitation of diseases affecting the motor nerve response, nerve roots, peripheral nerves, and neuromuscular junction. How are they treated?

  • The neuromuscular drugs can be administered orally or through IM/IV methods. These drugs, once in the bloodstream, target neuromuscular joints and produce a slight anesthesia effect.
  • During surgery, they are used to relax the vocal cords to ensure smooth passing of an endotracheal tube and relax the muscles of the abdomen and diaphragm.
  • Depolarizing and non-depolarising neuromuscular drugs are used to gain proper neuromuscular joint blockage. Some of the examples of such drugs are, succylincholine, vecuronium, rocuronium, etc,
  • They act by decreasing the effect of neuron transmission by binding and blocking stimuli receptors. The blockage first causes muscle contraction, followed by paralysis after which, no normal neuron stimulus from the nerve cannot cause contraction of the muscle as it is paralyzed.
