What is Shoulder Replacement Surgery ?

Shoulder replacement surgery helps remove the damaged parts of the shoulder and regain proper function by placing prosthetic implants. The indications for shoulder replacement surgery are arthritis, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, trauma, cuff tears, rotational pain, Rotator cuff arthroplasty, avascular necrosis or tissue death, and more. In cases of fractures or trauma, the surgery is performed if the fracture fixation has failed or is not indicated. The types of shoulder replacement based on the technique used are – total shoulder replacement, reverse total shoulder replacement, and partial shoulder replacement.

What is Shoulder Replacement Surgery?

Shoulder replacement surgery helps remove the damaged parts of the shoulder and regain proper function by placing prosthetic implants. The indications for shoulder replacement surgery are arthritis, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, trauma, cuff tears, rotational pain, Rotator cuff arthroplasty, avascular necrosis or tissue death, and more. How is it done?

  • Pre-operative radiography, diagnostic tests, and patient preparation will be done. The surgery is generally done under general anesthesia
  • A 6-inch long incision will be made along the shoulder starting from the top and curving it towards the deltoid muscles.
  • After dissecting the underlying tissues, the knee cap will be exposed which will also be separated.
  • The skin is evaluated, and underlying tissues and a part of the Rotator cuff are cut to visualize the underlying humeral head.
  • The shoulder head or humeral is separated from the scapula. Using a bone guttering tool, the shoulder he’d be trimmed, and bony spurs causing pain will be removed. Inflammatory tissue will also be removed and the is irrigated properly.
  • The prosthetic shoulder head will be placed ok top of the prepared shoulder head and fit properly.
  • Patients will be advised not to exert too much pressure on their legs and knees for the following couple of days.
  • The surgeon will perform the final finishing and sutured the cut layers back. The patient’s shoulder may be put in a cast for the following few days.
