What is Surgical oncology

Surgical oncology is a field of medicine that treats cancer by performing surgeries. As cancer cells can grow rapidly and can stay dormant until they metastasize to effect other adjacent structures, cancer surgeries are performed in such a way that no neoplastic growth is left behind. Usually doctors also remove a part or layer of the adjacent organs along with the organ or part affected by the neoplasm. Surgical oncologists treat pathologies like tumors and cysts by studying their growth and malignancy rate. Sometimes a tumor is just too huge and it’s removal may affect the adjacent structures in these cases, surgical oncologists plan the treatment in such a way that reconstruction is done and normal functionality of the organ parts is met.

What is Trauma surgery

Trauma surgery is the interventional, open surgical procedure done to treat injuries, fractures,
burns, ulcers, herniation, crush injuries, and more in an acute setting using both operative and non-
operative management techniques. The injuries can be due to heavy impact forces, road traffic
accidents, falls or object crushes, sports injuries, and more. Trauma surgery also has knowledge of
the adjacent musculoskeletal structures and vital structures like nerves and arteries because
whenever an injury occurs, it is most likely to involve one or the other adjacent structures. The
injuries may be life-threatening too. Trauma surgeons are trained in immediate and complete
management of the injury.

How is it done?

  • They start by assessing the growth of the tumor. Its dimensions, vital structure involvement and boundaries are checked by performing multiple tests.
  • They also perform biopsies to stud the malignancy rate and at which neoplastic stage the tumor cells are.
  • Once the surgical profile is discussed, they carefully open an incision, separate overlying tissues, visualize the tumour and excise it.
  • Based on its malignancy level, adjacent parts may also be treated. Irrigating medication and/or laser technology may be used to destroy any remaining tumour cells that may not have come out with the tumour.
  • Based on the extent of excision and anatomy of the adjacent structures involved, graft placement and reconstruction might also be done.
  • Proper dressing and follow-up will be done to see to it that there is no new growth and the healing is adequate.
