What is Transnasal Surgery ?

Transnasal surgery or transnasal transsphenoidal surgery is the minimally invasive surgical procedure done to remove tumors affecting, or near the pituitary gland. An endoscope, with a camera attached to the tube, is passed through the nose to visualize and assess the tumors. These tumors mostly occur due to genetic mutations and DNA changes. The presence of these tumors results in the compression of important brain structures and makes the pituitary gland abnormally secrete hormones. The patient suffers from hormonal imbalances, changes in bone composition and form, and/or lower blood pressure.

  • Did when they were healthy. Hemodialysis helps control blood pressure and balance.
  • Important minerals, such as potassium, sodium, and calcium, in your blood.
  • Hemodialysis can help you feel better and live longer, but it’s not a cure for kidney failure.
  • You may be able to do hemodialysis at home. Normally, hemodialysis begins well before your kidneys have shut down to the point of causing life-threatening complications.

What is Transnasal Surgery ?

How is it done?

  • The surgical procedure is done under general anesthesia hence the patient is given pre-medication.
  • The patient is kept on vasoconstrictors to decrease the bleeding during surgery. The nasal cavity will be prepared with antibiotic and antiseptic rinses.
  • The procedure is done in conjunction with an imaging technique to visualize. The endoscope is inserted into the nose at the side of the nasal septum and is moved in.
  • A small portion of the nasal septum and the involved sinus is removed to gain access. The bone overlying the pituitary gland is also sectioned to visualize the gland.
  • Once the tumor is visualized, it will be excised using curettes passed through the nose. After complete excision, proper irrigation and graft placement will be done.
  • The area will be closed and dressed properly. The patient will be kept under medication and rest. Blowing, sneezing, or disturbing the nose should be avoided.
